Education faculty member appointed field editor of science teaching journal


Brooke A. Whitworth has been named field editor Science Teachera respected, award-winning journal from the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA). Whitworth officially assumed her role on September 1.

“We are excited to have Dr. Whitworth in charge of Science Teacher. Her deep understanding of the evolving landscape of science education will help guide the journal’s mission to provide high-quality, relevant content for today’s educators,” said Cathy Iammartino, Chief of Publications and Digital Products at NSTA. “I am confident that under her editorial leadership, the journal will continue to inspire innovation in the classroom and support high school teachers in providing engaging and effective science lessons.”

Whitworth, an associate professor of science education at Clemson University, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. With leadership positions at many institutions, including serving as chair of the science department at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and holding key roles at Northern Arizona University, the University of Mississippi, and Clemson University, she has a background outstanding in science education.

Whitworth has also been actively involved in national organizations, including the Association of Science Teacher Educators and the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST). With nine years of middle school teaching and a decade as a teacher educator, she is an exciting addition to the magazine.

“I am excited to take on the role of Field Editor Science Teacher and contribute to such an influential publication,” Whitworth said. “This is an exciting opportunity to amplify voices in the science education community and highlight new approaches that engage students while enriching their learning experience.”

Whitworth will play a key role in shaping the journal’s content by identifying key topics related to middle school science education, soliciting input from a diverse range of educators, and overseeing the manuscript review process. Her responsibilities include ensuring that articles reflect sound judgment, exemplary safety practices, scientific accuracy, practical application in the classroom, and compliance with Next Generation Science Standards.

Published six times a year, Science Teacher is a peer-reviewed practitioner journal for middle and high school science teachers, university faculty involved in teacher preparation, and state and district science education leaders. Science Teacher shows innovative research-based classroom activities and strategies related to A framework for K–12 science educationas well as articles on key topics such as teaching strategies, social justice and equity.
